Editorial Policy
A ranking is a set of counting decisions. This page states every decision we make, so readers can disagree with a specific rule instead of distrusting the whole table.
1. Scope of coverage
We include a company when (a) its primary business is quantum technology and (b) at least one financing event is publicly disclosed. We cover quantum computing (processors, control stacks, error correction and enabling software), quantum communication (QKD, quantum networks, satellite links) and quantum sensing/metrology. We exclude pure-play post-quantum cryptography vendors, academic labs, and suppliers whose quantum business is incidental.
We do include public-market capital events — IPOs, secondary offerings, at-the-market programmes — and certain state-capital injections, because omitting them would make the US and Chinese tables incomparable in the opposite direction. Where we do so, the event is labelled by its capital type rather than presented as a venture round.
2. Source hierarchy
- Primary filings and official disclosures — SEC filings, STAR Market prospectuses, stock-exchange announcements, government programme notices.
- Company-issued material — press releases, investor updates, official blog posts.
- Independent reputable reporting — Reuters, Bloomberg, TechCrunch, Sifted and established regional business press.
- Automated monitoring leads — Google News RSS and GDELT matches. These are leads, never a source of truth, and are always labelled.
A lower tier never overrides a higher tier. When a press report conflicts with a filing, the filing wins and the discrepancy is noted. We do not cite another aggregator as evidence of an amount.
3. Verification levels
| Reviewed · high | Primary filing or at least two independent reputable reports agreeing on amount, date and round. |
|---|---|
| Reviewed · medium | One primary announcement or one reputable report, no conflicting figure found. |
| Reviewed · low | Secondary reporting only, or the amount was partially disclosed (e.g. “several hundred million RMB”). |
| Unverified · auto | Found by the daily pipeline, not yet checked by a human. Shown with an ⚡ badge and excluded from the “data cutoff” date. |
The distinction matters because the ranking totals include auto-detected amounts only where they are genuinely new. We would rather understate a total than publish a flattering number built from unverified headlines.
4. De-duplication of syndicated reports
Funding rounds are routinely covered by a dozen outlets within 48 hours. Treating each headline as a separate event would double-count capital and make the timeline unreadable. At publication time we merge reports for the same company inside a short date window when their amounts agree within tolerance, when both are undisclosed, or when one is a named round and the other a generic “reported raise” aggregate. The strongest-sourced record survives; the number of merged reports is disclosed on the surviving note.
The raw event ledger is not rewritten: it keeps every report, so the merge is auditable. Merging affects what readers see, not what the dataset records. Cumulative company totals additionally de-duplicate auto-collected amounts against reviewed amounts before summing.
5. Automation and AI assistance
Automation is used for discovery, matching and the mechanical parts of page generation: scanning feeds, matching company names, computing aggregates, rendering tables and sitemaps. It is not used to invent figures, companies, investor names or quotes. Every number on the site traces back to a record in the JSON ledger.
Where a published event note interprets a round (“this reflects a manufacturing-led roadmap”), the sentence is a hedged editorial reading of public facts, not a new factual claim. Language models may assist with drafting and with Chinese localisation, but the underlying claims, amounts and classifications are reviewed before publication. We do not generate hundreds of keyword-variant pages; each ranking page corresponds to one real reader demand and carries its own written analysis.
6. Money, currency and classification
- Amounts are stored in USD. Non-USD figures are converted at approximate rates and, where disclosure is vague, treated as a lower bound with a tilde.
- Valuation is stored separately from cash raised and never added to a funding total.
- Grants and non-dilutive funding are included only when part of a reported financing package; policy letters of intent are shown in the timeline but do not move totals.
- Each company gets one primary HQ and one primary technology path. Dual-HQ and multi-technology companies are flagged rather than duplicated across tables.
- Chinese pages display 亿美元 / 万美元 units; this is a unit conversion of the same USD value, not a currency conversion.
7. Bylines and dates
Every indexable page carries a visible attribution block naming the responsible desk and the review function. It shows two different dates on purpose: data cutoff (the newest human-reviewed event in the dataset) and page generated (when this HTML was rendered). A site that prints today's date on a table of 2021 financings is implying freshness it has not earned. Sitemap lastmod values come from content hashes, so an unchanged page does not claim to be new each day.
We do not publish invented individual author biographies for a compiled dataset. Where the byline identifies a desk rather than a person, that is accurate rather than a deficiency.
8. Independence and conflicts
QuantumRoundup has no commercial relationship with any company listed, accepts no payment for inclusion or placement, and carries no affiliate or referral links in its data tables. If the site is ever supported by advertising, ad placement is separated from editorial content and disclosed in the privacy policy; it cannot influence the ranking. Errors of our own are corrected in the open via the corrections log.
9. Corrections and reader challenges
Send a primary source to [email protected]. Confirmed errors are fixed in the next daily build and logged; disputed figures stay as they are with the reasoning recorded. Material changes to counting rules are described on this page and in the log with a date. See the contact page for the exact submission format and response times.
